Many people today find themselves trapped in their jobs. Either they want to do something else or they think that their skills are not utilized properly. Some career management articles go as far to suggest that you can quit your job if you are not happy in it, but it is easier said than done. The reasons could be many:
- Work life balance
- Good salary
- Easy Commute
- Pension or retirement benefits
Thus, it is not easy to change jobs at the drop of a hat. According to me, there is really no such thing as a perfect job. No company or work profile can meet all your requirements. You will usually have to compromise on a couple of aspects. You need to identify the aspects which matter to you, which cannot be compromised for any reason. The great thing about going this exercise is that it makes you realize the important factors in your work life. You may also surprised to find that your current job profile is not that bad after all!
There are many ways in which you can make your current workplace the best that you have worked in. Try to align yourself with your profession. If you think that your overall job profile is not offering everything you need, you may want to think deeply about your passion and ways to boost your profession. Find more ways to get involved with others in the profession. It can be done via professional development classes, dinners and networking events, social networking sites and professional groups. Try to get out of our comfort zone and look beyond the four walls of the office. The outside world is full of knowledgeable and friendly people who can offer great advice on self-enrichment.
Try to get more involved in your profession by opting to speak and present at events and conferences. Take all those hidden great ideas and share them with the world. Position yourself as a person of knowledge to improve your reputation among your peers. Social networking tools such as LinkedIn and Twitter also offer great avenues to connect with important people and learn more about the world.
It’s your career and you need to take charge of it, NOW!
