Innovation: Both Disruptive and Adaptive

The stories of ‘the father of automobiles’, where he has a more far-reaching vision than ‘faster horses’, has been some of our first anecdotal trysts with innovation. Thinking beyond just a bunch of ticked-off questions on a form, adding empathy to the mix and creating something disruptive are catching on as tenets of a well innovated project. From the mysticism that surrounded the world of innovation ( furthered to some extent by Steve Jobs ‘misfits, rebels’ speech ) we have come a long way in crafting out the tenets as outlined above with parameters that can guide people and projects.

The iconic Tim Brown from IDEO outlines Feasibility, Viability, and Desirability as the sanity check-factors for innovation. Innovation is one of the key philosophies in the spirit of e-Zest that is at the heart of every aspect that has been considered in our solutions and services.

The Intellectual Property and Innovation Center at e-Zest has laid out its plans to serve some pressing needs with offerings that are already up and running with feasible future blueprints. It has also offered several benefits in terms of saving a lot of time and money for various industries out there. It is the last of the three stops that we have to pull over at; with desirability being where we go a step ahead.

The offerings of the IP and Innovation Center, CloudMap and TABit at e-Zest are already desirable, considering the traction that they are garnering rapidly even as you read this. The desirability ingredient is not just put to satiate one’s stomach, but address possible appetites and even upsets of the future. In the language of design thinking, the desirability factor is now ‘desirability++’. Desirability++ basically looks at a holistic range of problems faced by the individual and looks at a solution touching all the vertices. This starts out as a step1 or phase1 solution that addresses present and anticipated future pain points and results in a faster time-to-market. Subsequent steps chisels out the finer linings in the offerings and the ultimate result is the innovative offering customized to solve the customer’s specific need.

Taking a page from one of the offerings, TABit as an example, we address content-mobilization, delivery and management problems; some of which are pressing for the customer and others may be at a more nascent stage. The very groundbreaking editable feature for apps is sometimes seen as a fringe requirement by the customer. Based on our experience, we know that a content-driven application would need editing in terms of content in the future. Hence the feature stands packed in the offering, only not priced or activated.

Now as soon as that vertex amongst the requirement polygon emerges, we make the feature reappear and address it. The advantage to this is having only those features that solve your specific problem and having the other options at bay. So it is desirable at a different level, almost like being “intelligently desirable”. If automobiles were to follow this concept, as a car-owner, you can choose not to buy the music system with your car, but only at the touch of a button or a wish later, you can get it when you want it.

The IP and Innovation Center has taken the mission of solving the problems in its range with its scalable offerings and great customizations. The three factors, the tenets and checks apart, the desire to make a difference with disruptive and empathetic innovation takes us a step ahead in our mission.
