A few years ago, delivering a great experience to customers and in particular, to the users of digital applications was considered disruptive; today it’s the differentiator. What started around twenty years back as Human Computer Interface (HCI) is now christened as UX (User Experience). Whatever be the name, experience design has remained core to every organization’s attempt to create a relevant experience to its customers. Today design is at the forefront of digital revolution. Organisations now are more likely to understand a discussion surrounding design centric approach and how it gives them an edge in the competitive world than a decade back. In the hyper-connected world that we communicate-- products, services and customer experience are all connected. Whether it is a banking customer or an online shopper, each individual who is a direct customer or a user of the digital applications expects or even demands a unified experience consistent across all channels. This is the reason mature brands, some of whom are market leaders are applying design to offer a relevant experience to their customers. Organisations (read CEOs) across sectors are being driven to embrace design. There are several reasons for this but the most important being, rapid consumerisation of IT. CEOs no longer can keep the design teams at the fag end of the boardroom discussion. Why? Because it makes business sense, McKinsey’ Design Index (MDI) says that design-led companies enjoy a third more revenue and over 50% higher total shareholder returns compared with other companies failing to invest in design. In essence, the report hints a strong connect between design (read experience) led business and financial performance. With designers heading to the boardroom, organisations, and that also includes e-Zest, will have to give up siloed working culture.
