If you are in the Mobility business you cannot avoid hearing about the “Internet Of Things” (or IoT for the more clued in). This much anticipated event will ride on the Mobile infrastructure and seems to the next big wave all of us are anticipating. Almost everyone seems to be saying that the day is not far away when every”thing” will talk to every other “thing”. Those that don’t say that only differ in that they say this has already happened. One of the key challenges in the IoT era will be the standards (or language) that will govern how all these internet connected things will talk to each other. 3 big hardware names came together recently to try & bring some clarity to this situation. Samsung, Dell and Intel have joined hands to form the Open Interconnect Consortium (OIC) to try and set up the standards that will govern these conversations. Of-course this is not the only team in the game though – the AllSeen Alliance with over 50 members including major device players like LG Electronics and Panasonic is also aiming for the same goals. Maybe the next step would be for someone to come up with a set of standards governing how these consortia coming up with standards should communicate with each other?
